What happens during a stocktaking shift
Taking part in a stocktaking shift means working on-site to check stock levels in a shop or warehouse. While each shift may vary slightly, they generally follow a similar structure.
STEP 1
Arriving on site
On the day of the shift, participants meet at the location shown in the shift details. You’ll be welcomed by an Inventory Supervisor, who organises the start of the shift and gathers the team.
This is a chance to get ready and make sure everyone has the information they need.
STEP 2
Pre-shift briefing
Before the stocktake begins, a briefing is usually held. Even if it’s your first shift, this helps you quickly understand how everything works.
The Inventory Supervisor will explain:
How the shift will run
The rules to follow
The counting method used
STEP 3
Zone allocation
Once instructions have been given, participants are assigned to different areas of the shop or warehouse.
Each person is responsible for counting items in their designated section.
This ensures the entire site is covered efficiently.
STEP 4
Counting the items
The main task is to count the products on shelves or in storage areas.
Items are recorded using a handheld scanner. This device identifies products and logs the data needed for the count.
This step requires focus and accuracy to ensure reliable results.
STEP 5
End of the shift
Once all areas have been counted, the stocktake comes to an end.
Teams carry out final checks and return the equipment used.
The shift finishes once all tasks have been completed.
The role of the inventory supervisor
Throughout the shift, the Inventory Supervisor is present to support and guide the team.
They ensure everything runs smoothly and are available to answer any questions.
Their role includes:

Supporting participants
Monitoring progress
